National News: The Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Bill was passed by voice vote in the Lok Sabha.The Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Bill was passed by voice vote in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The main objective of this bill is to curb the growing addiction to online gaming, money laundering, and financial fraud incidents.

 Soon after the draft law was passed, the House was adjourned for the day amid uproar over demands raised by the opposition.

What's in the bill? 

The bill provides for a complete ban on advertisements related to online games. It ensures that no company or platform can promote such activities publicly. The law also places restrictions on banks regarding financial dealings connected with online gaming. Financial institutions are prohibited from facilitating or transferring money for these games.

Any payment gateway involved in such transactions will also come under scrutiny. This move strengthens the monitoring system against illegal gaming activities. Overall, it aims to bring strict regulation and compliance across the sector.

Online Betting And Gambling Illegal

The bill outlaws all online betting and gambling activities, from online fantasy sports to online gambling (such as poker, rummy, online lotteries, and other games). The move is likely to deal a blow to the country's $3.8 billion gaming industry that has attracted the attention of global investors. After this bill becomes law, online gaming apps like Dream11, Games24X7, and Mobile Premier League may get a big blow. This bill makes online money gaming a punishable offense. If caught, the law provides for a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to Rs 1 crore.
